FAQ about TYPO3 updates

Updates are a troublesome topic. Somehow you know they are necessary (data protection, security, etc.). On the other hand, they cost money without any operational or organisational benefit.

This statement is W-R-O-N-G !!! (at least the last sentence)

An update project always means that the entire website undergoes a review both by the programmer (templates, HTML/CSS code, extensions, etc.) and by the operator/editor (appearance, speed/etc.). It thus offers the opportunity to make fundamental optimisations to usability, machine readability and content quality.

Examples of this are:

When is a TYPO3 update necessary?

A major update (e.g. from version 10 to 11 or 12) is always required when the version in use no longer receives Long Term Support (LTS) and no ELTS (Extended Long Term Support) licence has been purchased.

Why does a TYPO3 update have to be made?

An update can have many reasons. One compelling reason is the Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), according to which the use of up-to-date software (see Article 32 Paragraph 1 "Consideration of the state of the art") is mandatory. As soon as no LTS or ELTS exists for the TYPO3 version used, no more security updates can be installed. The software is then considered vulnerable.

What are the advantages of a TYPO3 update?

Apart from technical security aspects and data protection regulations (see above), new TYPO3 versions also offer many functional improvements, such as faster loading times, a more comfortable backend and the use of modern technologies that were not yet available in older versions (e.g. LazyLoading for images).

What is the latest TYPO3 version?

The latest TYPO3 version is TYPO3 v12 LTS.

What does LTS mean?

LTS stands for Long Term Support and means that the version is provided with both security and feature updates free of charge. In the case of TYPO3, a version always receives 3 years of LTS. After that, a paid ELTS licence has to be purchased or an update to a newer version has to take place.

When is the next TYPO3 LTS version coming?

The next LTS version TYPO3 v13 is announced for the beginning of October 2024.

What does ELTS mean?

ELTS stands for Extended Long Term Support. This is a paid licence from TYPO3 GmbH that provides security updates for older versions (i.e. "non-LTS versions")

How to do a TYPO3 update?

An update of the core system of TYPO3 is done in the install tool.  The extensions ("Extensions") via the Extension Manager. An alternative way of installing an update is to use the "PHP Composer"

tool.

Can you perform a TYPO3 update yourself?

The execution of a TYPO3 update should be done by an experienced TYPO3 Integrator. The reason for this is the numerous changes to the interfaces, which require changes to templates, TYPOSCRIPT and the extensions.

How expensive is a TYPO3 update?

The cost of a TYPO3 update depends heavily on the number and type of extensions used, as well as the implementation and complexity of the system. Since the cost of updating the core system is usually manageable, the following applies: the fewer extensions in use, the cheaper an update will be.
