Updates are a troublesome topic. Somehow you know they are necessary (data protection, security, etc.). On the other hand, they cost money without any operational or organisational benefit.

An update project always means that the entire website undergoes a review both by the programmer (templates, HTML/CSS code, extensions, etc.) and by the operator/editor (appearance, speed/etc.). It thus offers the opportunity to make fundamental optimisations to usability, machine readability and content quality.
A major update (e.g. from version 8 to 9 or 10) is always required when the version in use no longer receives Long Term Support (LTS) and no ELTS (Extended Long Term Support) licence has been purchased.
Why does a TYPO3 update have to be made?
An update can have many reasons. One compelling reason is the Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), according to which the use of up-to-date software (see Article 32 Paragraph 1 "Consideration of the state of the art") is mandatory. As soon as no LTS or ELTS exists for the TYPO3 version used, no more security updates can be installed. The software is then considered vulnerable.
