WACON Cookie Management (WCM)

Website visitors must actively consent to the use of non-essential cookies before they may be set. Our extension "WACON Cookie Management" implements this opt-in process: visitors decide for themselves which cookie categories may be active, while editors centrally maintain all cookies in use in the TYPO3 backend.

Why a Simple Opt-Out Is No Longer Enough

In 2019, the European Court of Justice ruled that internet users must actively consent to the setting of non-essential cookies (opt-in). The previously common notice with a link to later deactivate cookies (opt-out) has since no longer been sufficient and violates the GDPR.

Technically essential cookies – for example for a shopping cart, checkout process or login – are exempt from the consent requirement. For tracking, marketing and other third-party cookies, however, the opt-in requirement applies without exception.

What WCM Does

Visitors see a consent box the first time they visit the website; it can be reopened at any time via a link in the footer to change settings. In the TYPO3 backend, editors centrally maintain all cookies in use – with a name, provider, category (e.g. "Necessary", "Statistics", "External") and an explanatory text describing why the respective cookie is needed.

For embedded third-party content such as social media timelines or maps, a 2-click solution can be set up: instead of loading automatically, the page first shows a placeholder image (e.g. with a "frosted glass" effect) along with explanatory text – only a deliberate click loads the actual content. Technically, the extension doesn't manage individual cookies but the entire code snippet (script or iframe) responsible for creating them: without consent, the relevant code simply isn't output at all.

Availability and License

WCM is available free of charge under the GNU GPL Version 2 license. Basic TypoScript knowledge is required for installation and configuration, plus CSS knowledge for customizing the appearance of the consent box.
