What Is Matomo?

Matomo (see www.matomo.org) is a free, open-source software for analyzing web statistics and visitor behavior. Thanks to its privacy-friendly options, Matomo is, in our view, often the better solution compared to Google Analytics, for example, where visitor data is stored on third-party servers.

With Matomo, for freely selectable time periods, you can:

  • groups

Analyze visitor statistics (count, average visit duration, bounce rates, etc.)

  • insights

Analyze page statistics (number of clicks, average time on page, entry/exit pages, etc.)

  • download

    Track download statistics

  • flag

    Set goals (e.g. conversions)

  • speed

Analyze the pagespeed of every page and quickly identify "slow" pages

  • campaign

Analyze channel acquisition (search engines, social media, websites)

  • save

Export data for further processing (e.g. Excel)

  • search

    Evaluate your website's internal search

  • mail

    Send reports regularly by email

10 Reasons for Matomo as Web Analytics for TYPO3 Websites

Anyone running a website wants to know whether it's successful: How many visitors come? Which pages are viewed most often? Where do users come from, and which content leads to an inquiry?

Matomo provides a powerful web analytics platform for exactly this. Matomo is especially interesting for businesses and organizations that value data protection and control over their own data.

1. Full Control Over Your Own Data

Matomo can be operated as an on-premise solution on your own server infrastructure. The collected analytics data therefore remains under the control of the website operator. This is a key difference from many cloud-based analytics and advertising platforms.

2. Configurable for Privacy

Matomo offers numerous features for privacy-friendly web analytics. These include, for example, IP address anonymization, adjustable retention periods, and various options for restricting tracking.

Whether visitor consent is required depends on the specific configuration and the applicable legal framework. Matomo should therefore not be treated categorically as "tracking without consent".

3. Independence from Google

Many websites use Google Analytics even though measuring a website's actual success usually doesn't require a connection to the Google advertising ecosystem.

Matomo offers an independent alternative. This can be an important argument especially for public authorities, universities, research institutions, associations, and privacy-conscious businesses.

4. Understanding Visitor Flows

Matomo answers key questions about how a website is used: Which pages are visited most often? Where do visitors enter? Which pages do they leave from? How long do they engage with certain content?

This makes it possible to see which parts of a website are working well and where there's potential for improvement.

5. Measuring Success and Conversions

Not every page view is equally valuable. What often matters is whether visitors carry out a desired action.

With Matomo, for example, contact inquiries, downloads, newsletter sign-ups, or other important actions can be tracked as goals or conversions.

This turns plain visitor statistics into a tool for measuring success.

6. Evaluating Marketing Campaigns

Anyone promoting their website via newsletters, LinkedIn, Google, industry portals, or other channels wants to know which efforts actually generate visitors and inquiries.

Campaign parameters let you attribute traffic to individual marketing efforts. This makes it much easier to judge which channels are actually working.

7. Valuable Insights for SEO and Content

Matomo also helps with the ongoing development of website content. Pages that are viewed particularly often, for example, show which topics visitors are interested in.

Conversely, pages with few views or high exit rates can indicate that content, internal linking, or user guidance should be improved.

This gives Matomo an important role in ongoing SEO and content optimization.

8. Measuring Downloads and Interactions

Especially for corporate, association, or scientific websites, it's not just classic page views that matter.

Matomo can track, for example, downloads of PDF documents, clicks on specific links, and other interactions. This makes it possible to see which publications, information offerings, or features are actually being used.

9. Open Source and Flexibly Extensible

Matomo is open source. This makes the platform very flexible to operate and adapt to individual requirements.

For organizations that want to remain independent of individual platform providers in the long run, this is a significant advantage.

10. Combines Very Well with TYPO3

Matomo and TYPO3 integrate excellently with one another. Tracking can be integrated centrally into the TYPO3 website and adapted to the consent management solution in use.

Especially for larger TYPO3 projects, multiple websites, or demanding data-protection requirements, this results in a professional web analytics infrastructure.
