TYPO3 is open source – the source code is openly readable. When a new security update is released, hackers compare the new version with the old one to pinpoint the security flaw in the previous version. That's why it's important to apply updates promptly.

PHP Needs Maintenance Too

TYPO3 requires PHP to run, which follows its own support schedule. Providers place great importance on infrastructure security – you should definitely take emails about the shutdown of old PHP versions seriously.

What to Watch Out for in a TYPO3 Update

  • For as painless a migration as possible, your system should be on at least version 7.6 LTS.

  • The LAMP environment should be up to date and meet the target version's requirements – your provider can advise on this.

TYPO3 Update to Version 14 by WACON

If you commission us with the upgrade, your provider will need the following resources:

  1. An independent webspace with a subdomain (e.g. staging.mydomain.com), ideally with a free SSL certificate (e.g. Let's Encrypt).

  2. Frontend password protection (via htpasswd).

  3. PHP 8.2, 8.3, 8.4 or 8.5.

  4. A dedicated database: MariaDB 10.4.3+, MySQL 8.0.17+, PostgreSQL 10.0+ or SQLite 3.8.3+.

What Do We Need for a Quote?

  • Your current TYPO3 version (tooltip when hovering over the browser tab in the backend)
  • Extensions in use (Admin Tools → Extension List, a screenshot is fine)
  • Custom-written extensions – for these, we may take a joint look at the backend (e.g. via TeamViewer)

Extension scan tip: From TYPO3 v9 onward, the Extension Scanner (Admin Tools → Update → Scan Extension Files) provides valuable pointers to outdated API calls that would definitely cause errors during the update.

Carrying Out a TYPO3 Update Yourself

You can of course update your TYPO3 system yourself. Here's what to keep in mind:

  • Never run a major update on the live system – there is no fallback in the installation process.

  • First update your existing version and all extensions to the latest state.

  • Check which extensions you actually need and whether a compatible version is available.

  • Check and update your installation's global reference index.

  • Enable the deprecation log file in the Install Tool and let a few days pass.

  • Run a database analysis using the Install Tool.

Avoid Trouble: Test the Update Thoroughly

Many service providers consider an update complete as soon as the core and extensions are compatible. Real testing is often skipped – which can get expensive. Our checklist helps, even without deep TYPO3 know-how.
