A New AI Report in Search Console

Google has introduced a dedicated report in Search Console under Performance → Generative AI. Google says it has been rolling out worldwide since 31 August 2026. That's a meaningful step forward, but the report is still fairly limited. Details are available in the official GSC documentation.

It currently shows:

It Currently Shows

  • visibility

Impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode

  • calendar_month

the trend over day, week, or month

  • article

    the affected landing pages

  • public

    breakdowns by country and device

  • table_chart

    exportable table and chart data

An impression occurs whenever a link to your website is shown in such an AI response. If two links from the same website appear within one AI response, the aggregated property view generally counts this as only one impression.

The most important limitations:

The Most Important Limitations

  • block

The separate AI report currently appears to show only impressions – no clicks, CTR, or average position.

  • help

The original search query is not shown. You know which URL was visible, but not for which question.

  • compress

AI Overviews and AI Mode are combined; they cannot be analyzed separately.

  • filter_alt

The report only captures generative features within Google Search – not ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, the Gemini app, or Microsoft Copilot.

  • science

    Search Labs experiments are excluded.

  • format_list_numbered

The usual GSC limits apply, such as a maximum of 1,000 table rows and possible differences between chart and table totals.

  • layers

The data comes from the "Web" search type. It is therefore a subset of the data already included in the regular Search performance report and should not be added on top of its totals.

If the report is missing despite the global rollout, Google says the property may not yet have collected enough AI impressions. Recent data may also be provisional.

Our Practical Take

Right now the report is primarily a visibility indicator, not a complete performance or conversion tool. What's particularly interesting:

  1. Which page types are regularly used as a source.

  2. Whether AI visibility is rising while classic clicks stagnate or fall.

  3. Which countries and devices are driving visibility.

  4. Whether revisions to individual pages later generate more AI impressions.

What This Means for Optimization

For optimization, Google essentially still recommends solid, standard SEO: indexable pages, clear answers, original information, good internal linking, and suitable images, videos, product, and local data.

A special "GEO file" or llms.txt provides no advantage for Google – Google has explicitly clarified that llms.txt affects neither visibility nor ranking.
