The Not-So-Helpful Comparison With WordPress

Countless comparisons between TYPO3 and WordPress circulate online, usually reaching the same conclusion: TYPO3 for high demands and big budgets, WordPress for everything else. In our view, this is misleading – it's a classic apples-to-oranges comparison, and there are numerous alternatives to both systems. Which CMS solution fits primarily depends on an organization's goals – not its size or budget. Incidentally, a TYPO3 website can also be set up with manageable effort using pre-configured packages.

Advantages of TYPO3

    License-free open-source technology: TYPO3 is available to everyone free of charge under the GPL v2 – with no arbitrary licensing policy or technical lock-in.

    Large developer community: Especially in German-speaking countries, there are many specialized agencies and freelancers – switching providers is possible at any time, ruling out economic dependency.

    Pagespeed optimization: Caching, lazy loading, automatic WebP generation and responsive images minimize load times.

    Search engine optimization: Numerous editorial SEO controls, plus an info module to avoid 404 errors in large page structures.

    Scalability: Microsites, multilingualism, cloud operation, or technologies like Redis and Varnish can be implemented quickly and reliably.

Disadvantages of TYPO3

    No frontend editing: Unlike some website builders, editors can't edit content directly in the visitor-facing view. The TYPO3 backend has steadily improved, but can still feel unwieldy to inexperienced users.

    More scrutiny due to open source code: As open-source software, the source code is also open to attackers. Applying security updates promptly is therefore especially important.

    No liability or warranty: GPL licensing releases developers from any liability – there's no entitlement to fixes or damages.

    Gentle learning curve, noticeable development costs: Building your own TYPO3 website exactly the way you want it requires a fair amount of ramp-up – usually you'll hire an agency or freelancer for this.

    Cost of updates: TYPO3 keeps evolving; free security updates are available during the three-year LTS period, after which Extended LTS or a version upgrade comes with costs.

    Growing commercialization: TYPO3 GmbH, founded in 2016, offers commercial add-on services such as Extended LTS, SLAs, or a partner program – in our view, it's increasingly evolving into a sales platform for larger agencies.

Is TYPO3 the Right CMS for You?

There's no blanket answer based on criteria like organization size or industry. Roughly speaking, three approaches can be distinguished: a website builder (e.g. Wix or Jimdo) is suited to a quick, low-cost website with limited customization – a genuine web strategy is hardly possible with it. WordPress is the world's most widely used open-source CMS, easy to install and extendable with many affordable templates, but also a frequent target of successful hacking attacks. TYPO3 is usually the right choice when professional demands are placed on functionality, scope, and security.

TYPO3 is particularly well suited when the website is multilingual, needs interfaces to third-party systems, involves many editors with different permissions, has a complex navigation structure with lots of content, where security and a high degree of customization matter, or where the site needs to run stably for years.
