Using QR Codes in TYPO3

Since TYPO3 14, a dedicated module for generating QR codes has been part of the backend. What's special about it: the code itself always stays the same – yet the destination it points to can be changed at any time, without ever having to regenerate or reprint the QR code.

Generating QR Codes Directly in the Backend

Since TYPO3 14, a new "QR Codes" module is available in the "Link Management" area, alongside the familiar "Redirects" module. Editors can use it to create a QR code for any destination – such as a landing page, a PDF document, or an external URL – without an external tool.

download

The finished code can be downloaded directly from the module in different formats (PNG, SVG) and sizes – suitable for web, flyers, or large-format printing.

The Principle: Fixed Code, Changeable Destination

Technically, the QR code module builds on TYPO3's existing redirect functionality: each QR code doesn't point directly to its actual destination, but to a permanent, unique TYPO3-native URL. This URL redirects to the stored destination behind the scenes. The QR code itself – the printed or digitally distributed image – never changes.

insights

Because the same technology as regular redirects is used, QR codes automatically benefit from their features: hit counters for measuring success, enforced HTTPS, and an optional expiry date can all be used just like with classic redirects.

campaign In Practice

Typical Use Cases

  • print

Print campaigns: Flyers, posters or business cards can keep being used after printing, even if the linked action or landing page changes later.

  • sync_alt

Recurring product packaging: A code printed once can point to up-to-date product information or campaign pages over the years.

  • local_activity

Events and invitations: A code on an invitation can still be redirected to a changed registration page right up until shortly before the event.

  • restaurant_menu

Menus and notices: The printed code stays the same, while the digital menu behind it is updated at any time.
