What's Changing in TYPO3 Version 14

1. Radically Modernized Backend (UX & Design)

The entire look has been streamlined and tuned for productivity:

• New module structure: To lower the entry barrier, modules were renamed more logically. "Web" is now "Content", "Files" became "Media", and the "Page" module now goes by "Layout".
• Improved navigation: A new, central breadcrumb bar in the header makes orientation easier. There's also a global language switcher that stays active across module boundaries, plus a new "Recently opened documents" button for quickly getting back to content.
• Action buttons: Frequently used commands like "Save", "Close" or "Reload" are now placed consistently in fixed positions, sparing editors' muscle memory.
• Content editing overlay approach: Previously, editing an element in TYPO3 usually opened a whole new view, pulling the user out of the page's visual context. Version 14 introduces a side-panel/overlay system: clicking the "edit" pencil opens a slide-in dialog, while the page layout stays visible in the background – this also works for page properties.

2. Focus on Multilingualism

Handling international pages has been massively improved:

• Multi-language selection: In the page and list modules, multiple languages can now be displayed and edited side by side simultaneously.
• Translation wizard: A new guided workflow helps editors localize content step by step and error-free.

3. New Features for Editors & Marketers

• Context panel for content editing: When editing content elements or page properties, a panel now opens from the right without reloading the whole page. Anyone who prefers the classic behavior can disable the panel in user settings.
• Content Blocks: This new way of defining content is meant to replace older concepts like Mask or DCE in the medium term, offering a native, structured foundation for custom content elements.
• Improved page creation wizard: A new, step-by-step wizard guides editors through creating new pages and helps fill in all relevant fields.
• Centralized bookmark management: Bookmarks can now be organized into groups. Administrators can also set up system-wide bookmarks for all users.
• Short URLs: Under "Sites → Link Management", there's a new module for managing short URLs with features like visit counters, mandatory SSL, and expiry dates.
• QR code module: A native tool for generating QR codes for URLs directly from the backend – ideal for marketing campaigns without third-party tools.
• "Camino" frontend theme: Version 14.1 introduced a modern, ready-to-use default theme that enables a fast start for new projects.
• AI integration: TYPO3 14 lays the infrastructure groundwork for deeper AI integrations to assist with text creation or image optimization.

4. Improvements to Form Building

• Multiple file uploads now possible within a single form field
• Rich-text editing in text areas via CKEditor 5

• PHP requirement: TYPO3 v14 requires at least PHP 8.3 and uses its latest features for better performance and type safety.
