Since May 2021, Google has factored the Core Web Vitals into search rankings. The three metrics measure how visitor-friendly a website actually is – independent of content quality alone.
The easiest way is via Google's PageSpeed Insights: enter the URL of a single page there (there's no way to analyze an entire website at once) and get separate scores for the mobile and desktop versions.
A second, site-wide view is provided by Google Search Console under "Experience → Core Web Vitals". Note: this doesn't always account for every page Google has indexed – clicking "Open Report" shows details and possible errors for individual pages.
According to a Google study on website usability, load time has by far the biggest influence on how a website is perceived – ahead of intuitiveness (how quickly visitors find what they're looking for), responsiveness, and usability. A short load time is therefore a core building block of any search engine optimization.
There's also a clear correlation with bounce rate: the longer a page takes to load, the more likely a visitor is to leave the website without viewing a second page.
Pages with very large hero or background images can also be well optimized in TYPO3. The key is delivering images responsively – i.e. at the appropriate resolution for desktop, tablet, and smartphone – and in the space-saving WebP format.
Reasons for a high LCP – and how to fix it with TYPO3.
