Position Zero : How to Stand Out from the Competition

Google increasingly answers search queries directly and links to the source – even above paid ads. Structured data improves your chances of landing this coveted position.

Structured Data Improves Your Visibility

Structured data is part of a web page's source code and describes the meaning (semantics) of its content. This lets search engines understand a website much better and factor it into search queries more precisely.

  • verified Once set up in TYPO3, generation happens automatically based on your editorially maintained content.

HTML/CSS vs. Structured Data

HTML and CSS define HOW content is displayed. Structured data, on the other hand, describes WHAT the content means – for example, that an image is a company logo. Google can then display such a marked-up logo in different places, such as the Knowledge Graph or job listings.

The Benefit for You

Structured data helps search engines better understand the meaning of your web page content. In return, search engines "reward" this with better visibility – including in rich snippet results.

Google Update October 2023: Since then, Google no longer considers HowTo markup, and FAQ markup only works for trusted government and health websites. Adding it doesn't hurt, but in our view the extra effort is no longer worth it.

terminal Here's How

Manually Adding Structured Data in TYPO3

Even without programming knowledge, structured data can be implemented in just a few steps.

  1. Generate JSON code via a schema generator (e.g. technicalseo.com/tools/schema-markup-generator/) or create it manually

  2. In the TYPO3 page tree, select the desired page and create a new content element

  3. Choose "General HTML" as the content type

  4. Paste the JSON code via copy & paste and save

  5. Verify your input with Google's Rich Results Test tool

info

Automatic Output: Manually inserting structured data is really meant for exceptional cases. It's error-prone and cumbersome. In most cases, you should make sure structured data is output automatically instead. As a TYPO3 service provider, we're happy to help you with this.

Checking in Google Search Console

Google Search Console shows which structured data Google has detected on which pages of your website. If there are problems, errors are displayed that you should correct promptly.

Our Experience

Our experience with using structured data has been consistently positive – impressions on Google noticeably improved after adding HowTo markup.

Tip for Featured Snippets

To have a chance at the featured snippet box at the very top of search results, it's best to add structured data to a page that already ranks on the first results page (positions 1–10).
